Norman R. Eavenson, Jr. was born in West Chester on October 26, 1947. Norm, a lifelong resident of the Borough, died unexpectedly on November 14, 2021. Mary Frank McCormick: Basketball

Mary McCormick developed her athletic skills early in life by regularly playing sports with her four older brothers and their friends. She experienced no female competition until she reached high school, where she was a record-setting varsity basketball player in the Philadelphia Catholic League. As a four-year starter for the Mighty Macs of Immaculata, Mary led the league in scoring, was frequently described as the “best forward around,” and was selected for the first team College All-Star Team. Horatio Viscount “Berky” Nelson, Jr. was a 1957 graduate of Oxford High School. Berky excelled at Oxford as both a student and an athlete. Nelson was outstanding for Oxford in Track and Field in the Southern Chester County League-where he won numerous hurdle and broad jump awards. LEARN MORE

“Irish” Joe Rowan was a lifelong Phoenixville resident and attended Phoenixville High School. A veteran, Rowan served in the U.S. Army in the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, and trained a championship Army boxing team. LEARN MORE

Charles Ash “Pie” Way: Football
Historical Class of 2022

Charles Way graduated from Downingtown High School in 1916 where he played basketball, baseball, football and track, competing against other Chester County Schools like West Chester, Coatesville, Berwyn, Oxford and Kennett Square. After brief service in the US Army during World War I, Way began an outstanding collegiate and professional football career. He played college football at Pennsylvania State University, where he was a consensus All-American as a halfback. LEARN MORE
