Ellsworth “Ellsy” Chandler was born July 18, 1930 in West Chester, Pa. Ellsy attended West Chester High where he played both football and baseball from 1944-48. Ellsy was approached by the Athletic Director and Coach Harold Zimmerman to go behind the plate for the baseball team as it was in need of a catcher. Ellsy never caught before, but Mr. Zimmerman said he would help teach Ellsy the position if he needed help. Ellsy played the position and never looked back.

When he joined the Air Force, he played baseball on the Air Force team. When he was sent to England Ellsy took to the game of soccer. Ellsy seemed to be in the right place at the right time and was approached to box for the Air Force team. Ellsy had never boxed and that didn’t seem to matter. The head of the boxing team was impressed with his work ethic and signed him up to fight.

After his military career he returned home to West Chester and began playing for Grocery Store Products in the West Chester Community League. He joined the Red Men who played in the Delco Valley League and they joined the West Chester Adult Baseball League in 1957, its second year. In his time with the Red Men in the Adult League Ellsy was on the receiving end of five no-hitters including a double no-hitter involving Trans-Materials in 1973. In 1959 he even pitched in a combined no-hitter over Rubinsteins. A highlight of the 1980 season with the Red Men was playing with his son Gary while winning the Play-off Championship.

In 2002 at the age of 72 he set an Adult League record as the oldest player to get a hit and an RBI. In addition to the Red Men, Ellsy played and coached for Konstance Co, Trans-Materials and the Thunder in the Adult League. He was inducted into the West Chester Adult League Hall of Fame in 1982.

For many years he was employed by the Bell Telephone Company. He was an avid runner and loved playing basketball. He even played on an over-50 basketball team while in his 70s. Ellsy never let his age stop him from enjoying the sports he loved. He was inducted into the West Chester Adult League Hall of Fame in 1982.
