Kathy McCartney, graduated from Bishop Shanahan and LaSalle University. At Shanahan, Kathy starred on both the basketball and softball teams, and was an SCCL All-Star in both sports. She captained both sports, but it was in basketball that she really excelled. Kathy was the first female 1,000 point scorer in school history, and was named a High School All-American in her senior year.
At the conclusion of her high school career, she was named Bishop Shanahan’s Outstanding Female Athlete, and earned a full basketball scholarship to Manhattan College. At Manhattan, Kathy was named to the ECAC All-Rookie Team. After her freshman year, she transferred to LaSalle University where Kathy participated in the NCAA tournament in her senior year.
After graduating, Kathy was named the Head Basketball Coach at Villa Maria Academy. There she has guided her team to 15 league championships and 10 District I Championships. Her teams have made several deep runs into the PIAA State Tournament, making 5 semifinal appearances and 1 state final appearance. During her tenure, Kathy’s teams have won an impressive 588 games.
Off the court, Kathy has made contributions to the larger community as well. She makes sure that her teams understand the importance of community service. Her players participate in a community service project annually, this year reading to students at the Bancroft School in Kennett Square. In 2017, Kathy was recognized by Youth Mentoring Partnership for her leadership, coaching and mentoring of Chester County youth.
