Miss Jessie Pyle

Miss Jessie Pyle (1864-1948) grew up in West Marlborough. She received an A.B. degree from Swarthmore College in 1888 and did graduate work at Cornell University in 1889.

In 1914, Miss Pyle, representing Herrmann’s Physical Training Institute of Philadelphia, became the Women’s American National champion fencer at age 50. She was chosen as captain of the Philadelphia Fencer’s Club’s Ladies Team.

After the death of her father in 1917 she assumed her father’s role as postmaster and store proprietor in London Grove. She operated the London Grove Post Office until it was closed in 1934.

Jessie Pyle is a notable Chester County woman in sports because she pursued her dreams to become a national champion.
