Rebecca “Becky” Desmond, retired teacher and coach in the Downingtown School District. Becky graduated from Kutztown State College in 1961. After moving to Downingtown, her love for tennis and her desire to help others learn to play, led her to apply for a coaching position. In the Downingtown school district she became a respected art teacher, and along with other teachers, established a living arts show in the district for their students. She always encouraged her students to express themselves through art.
As a coach Becky attained the United States Professional Tennis Association's highest rating of elite professional for service, teaching, playing, industry and education. She taught / coached tennis for more than 40 seasons, won 15 Ches-Mont league championships and was named coach of the year by the U.S. Professional Tennis Registry in 2003. The Downingtown West High tennis courts were named for her in 2014. She was the first inductee into the U.S. Professional Tennis Registry Hall of Fame, which was attended by tennis legend Billie Jean King. Ms. Desmond was awarded the Tennis Hall of Fame Educational Merit Award in 1998.She co-authored a book on how to coach tennis successfully for the United States Tennis Association. Her outstanding accomplishments in the education and coaching field are an inspiration and are widely recognized and respected by her peers.
