Deirdre Kane
Basketball • West Chester

Kane is the winningest basketball coach in the long history of West Chester University basketball (men and women), amassing 447 wins during her 27 year career as head coach of the women’s basketball program. Deirdre was hired as West Chester’s first full-time women’s basketball coach in 1987 and, during her time as head coach, the Golden Rams won at least 20 games in seven seasons and qualified for the postseason in 18 of her last 19 seasons, winning 5 PSAC East division titles. In 1992, she led her team to a school record 25 victories. She started her head coaching career at Salisbury State(MD), and her wins there, combined with her victories at West Chester, give her 489 total career wins. Given that only 23 Division II women’s basketball coaches have achieved 500 career wins, Deirdre retired very close to achieving yet another milestone.
Deirdre is a member of three Halls of Fame, a five-time Conference Coach of the Year, and a three-time Regional Coach of the Year. An accomplished athlete herself, Deirdre was also the first woman to receive an athletic scholarship to Dayton University(OH). It is important to note that a large part of Deirdre’s legacy as head coach of West Chester’s women’s basketball program was her success in creating a family-style atmosphere within the program, and her strong emphasis on maintaining positive, mutually supportive relationships with her staff and players, relationships that would continue over the years.
