Joan Wagner is being honored for her outstanding career as a Field Hockey and Lacrosse Official. Joan attended Lower Merion High School and Millersville University. Wagner’s officiating career began in 1963, when she received her first field hockey rating. Within her 52 years of officiating field hockey Joan worked the AIAW Division I tournament, 12+ NCAA Championship appearances and 3 PIAA championships. Joan has served on the Philadelphia College Board, the Lenape Chapter Board, and the Philadelphia Board of Officials for Women’s Sports. Joan has been honored for her service by the PIAA, PBOWS and has received the Ann S. Whelan Award (Philadelphia College Coaches Umpire of the Year for ALL Sports) twice in her career. Joan started her lacrosse officiating career after she received her first rating in 1972. Since then Joan has reached the pinnacle of her profession receiving her International rating in 1985 and holds that rating still today. The championships that Joan has worked are numerous: 14+ years of working NCAA Division I, II and III tournaments as well as several PIAA State Championship games. On the International level Joan officiated the World Cup games in 1986- USA, 1989-Australia and 1993-Scotland; attaining the honor of officiating the championship game in 1986 and 1989. Joan served as a technical delegate for the World Cup games in Japan 1997 and the 1999 U-19 World championship in Australia and the European Championships in Germany in 2003. Joan has given of her time and energy to work officiating clinics and camps all over the world: USA, Canada, Australia, Japan, Czech Republic, England, Scotland, Sweden and Germany. She has served on the boards of: Philadelphia Women’s Lacrosse Officials, US Women’s Lacrosse Association, International Federation of Women’s Lacrosse Association, USLAX College Coaches & Umpires Ethics Committee and the NFHS Girls Lacrosse Committee. Joan still serves today as the PIAA State Interpreter for Girl’s Lacrosse. She has received the 25 year service award from the PIAA, PBOWS and in 2003 was awarded the Distinguished National Umpire Award. In 1998, she was inducted into the Eastern Pennsylvania Hall of Fame and the U.S. Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2003. Joan is still at the top of her profession, sharing her expertise and mentoring young officials; while continuing to run up and down field hockey and lacrosse fields blowing her whistle!
