Charles Frederick (Chuck) Weber, Jr., had a professional football playing and coaching career of 29 years. Chuck's football career began at nearby Abington High School. At West Chester State Teachers College he played four years of football where he was a defensive end, guard, and linebacker. He was a Little All American guard, In addition to football he wrestled and was the first wrestler to go to the NCAA National Championships from West Chester. He apparently played baseball, Intramural basketball and roller hockey. He also served as a co-captain on both the football and wrestling squads. Upon graduation he was not drafted by professional football. He joined the Marines where he played football at Cherry Point, North Carolina. After military service, the 6'1", 229 lb. athlete tried out for and made the Cleveland Browns squad in 1955. In 1956 he went from Cleveland to the Chicago Cardinals. In 1959 he returned home and culminated his career for the Philadelphia Eagles. Chuck is quoted in Joe Gordon's book: "As for my personal biggest thrill, it was certainly the 1960 Championship fame." What bigger thrill could there be for a guy born in Philadelphia and played football in West Chester? In 1961, the Eagles #51 middle linebacker and defensive signal caller retired. Chuck Weber returned to Abington High School as a football coach. In 1964 he began a 22-year career as a professional football coach retiring in 1985 from his second stint with the San Diego Chargers. After football came seven years as a mortgage loan officer with Great American Bank in San Diego. Chuck died on October 22, 2017 at the age of 87.
