Walt Downing was a scholar-athlete from Coatesville Area High School and was a
three-time All Ches-Mont First Team selection. At the University of Michigan, as
a three year center and team captain Walt was an All-American and appeared in 5
bowl games. Walt was also honored by the Touchdown Club of Columbus (Ohio)
as the Best Collegiate Offensive Lineman in the country. He was drafted in the
2nd round by the San Francisco 49ers in 1978 (47th overall pick). Downing played
professionally from 1978-1985, and was named to the NFL All-Rookie Team in his
first professional season. While a member of the 49ers in 1981, he won a Super
Bowl Ring. Downing was inducted into the City of Coatesville Hall of Fame in
1978 and the Coatesville Area High School Sports Hall of Fame in 2001.
