A native of Brockport (N.Y.) and a graduate of Brockport State, Mel made his
mark as a professor and head soccer coach at West Chester State Teacher's College
for 33 years. Lorback's 1961 team won the NCAA National Championship
by defeating St. Louis University, 2-0. As a reward for his team's 14-0 record
and the NCAA championship, Mel was named Coach of the Year by the National
Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). In 1974, he would serve
as president of the NSCAA. During Lorback's coaching career his teams won
three conference championships, won six NCAA regionals, played in two NCAA
semi-finals, and of course, won the 1961 championship. During his tenure 16 of
his players were recognized as All-Americans. Mel served briefly in the Navy in
World War II and would later serve in Korea with the U.S. Air Force from which
he retired with the rank of Lt. Colonel. Lorback died on August 31, 2004.
