Winner of the 2006 Kentucky Derby, Barbaro would soon become America's horse.
His margin of victory was the largest since 1946, when Triple Crown winner Assault
took the "Run for the Roses" by eight lengths. This powerful win made Barbaro only
the sixth undefeated horse to win the Kentucky Derby.
Two weeks later the Triple Crown contender broke his leg at the Preakness.
His valiant fight for life captured the hearts of the nation. Roy and Gretchen Jackson
demonstrated remarkable courage, grace and compassion, as the racing world and
millions of fans across the nation followed the courageous colt's
dramatic and poignant saga. Barbaro was euthanized ending
an eight-month ordeal that made him even
more of a hero than he was as a champion on the track.
