One of the game's most accomplished amateur golfers, Sigel posted victories in the U.S. Amateur, the British Amateur, and the U.S. Mid-Amateur. In addition to winning numerous other titles as an amateur, Jay represented the United States on nine Walker Cup Teams. He won the Philadelphia Open Championship on six occasions between 1975 and 1987. In 1994 at the age of 50, Sigel turned Pro and joined the Senior Tour (now known as the Champions Tour). Named Rookie of the Year on the Senior Tour in 1994, Jay earned 14 Top-10 finishes and claimed his first professional victory in the 1994 GTE Classic. Sigel would go on to win seven more times on the Senior/Champions Tour. Distinguished awards won by Jay include the Bob Jones Award, given by the USGA for distinguished sportsmanship (1984), and the Ben Hogan Award, as the top amateur golfer (also in 1984). Sigel was inducted into the Collegiate Golf Coaches of America Hall of Fame in 1988 and into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 1993.
