Maurene Polley
Coaching • Malvern

Maurene Polley’s career as a coach and administrator spans over 40 years at Villa Maria Academy. While there, she has coached field hockey, tennis, basketball and volleyball, but it is in the sport of field hockey where Polley sets herself apart from the others. The Head Coach at Villa Maria for 44 years, she has amassed 587 career wins and was named Coach of the Year 10 times. Villa Maria has captured 19 AACA League Championships under Polley’s tutelage, and qualified for the PIAA District I Playoffs 23 of 24 years - that is pretty good, considering Villa did not join the PIAA until 1988. While competing in postseason competition, Polley led her team to 11 PIAA District I Championships - including a record six consecutive championship years (2007-2012). To date, they are the only AA team in the District to have achieved that feat. In addition to the 10 championships were four Runner-Up finishes (1991, 1996, 2002 and 2006). The Hurricanes have also qualified for the Pennsylvania State Playoffs 21 times. They won the State Championship in both 1993 and 1994, and made State Final Four appearances eight times: 1991, 1993, 1994, 2005, 2008, 2009, 2011 and 2012. Polley’s influence in the world of field hockey continues, as she has had athletes play in numerous Division I programs. As an administrator, Polley’s leadership has guided the Athletics Department at Villa Maria to be among the finest in the area. The department has grown from three sports in 1968 (where she was the head coach for all three), to 12 thriving sports programs. And, for over 35 years, Polley has also directed an outstanding field hockey camp program for young girls. Polley is a West Chester State College graduate (1968), and was inducted into the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2012.
