Ben Davis burst upon the sporting scene in Chester County as a catcher for the baseball team at Malvern Preparatory School. As a senior at Malvern Prep in 1995, he hit .507 with four doubles, seven triples, six home runs and 37 RBI. USA Today labeled Ben the best high school catcher since Dale Murphy in 1974 and named Davis their 1995 All-USA Today Player of the Year. The San Diego Padres made him the #2 overall selection in the June amateur draft in 1995. A big man for a catcher at 6’4 and 195 pounds, Davis made his MLB debut for the Padres on September 25, 1998. Playing all or parts of four campaigns for San Diego, Ben’s finest season as a Padre occurred in 2001 when he appeared in 138 games, posting 20 doubles, 11 homers, 57 RBI, 66 walks and a batting average of .239. Following the 2001 season, he was dealt to the Seattle Mariners. As a Mariner, Davis saw action in 80 games in both 2002 and 2003 and in 14 games in 2004. However, it was in the middle of that 2004 season when Ben was again traded and was sent on June 27th to the Chicago White Sox. He was in 54 games in 2004 for the White Sox – for whom he played in his final MLB game on October 3rd at the age of 27. After toiling for three more years (2005-2007) in the minors attempting to make it back to the big leagues, Davis tried his hand at pitching since he still possessed a very strong arm. He saw action in 43 minor league games over a three-year span (2008-2010) and decided to hang up the spikes following the 2010 campaign due to an ailing right shoulder. Today, Davis is a commentator for Comcast Sports in Philadelphia handling pre- and postgame duties on Phillies’ broadcasts. Ben also spends time on radio station WIP as a contributor. Additionally, he is a salesman for Comcast-Spectacor at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia in the Premium Seating Department. Ben is now a member of the Phillies Broadcast Team. Davis continues to reside in Chester County with his wife and three children.
