Carl Gersbach
Football • West Chester

Carl Gersbach is being nominated for his excellence in football on both the collegiate and professional levels. Carl started his collegiate football career as a scholarship player at Duke University before transferring to West Chester University. Carl was a star performer for the 1968 and 1969 WCU football teams. His senior year, he was captain and starting linebacker for the 1969 team and, at season’s end, was named as a Kodak College Division Honorable Mention All-American. That year Carl was also selected to the Eastern Collage Athletic Conference (ECAC) All-East Division II team, as well as being chosen for the All Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) squad. In 1970, Carl signed as a free agent linebacker with the Philadelphia Eagles, for whom he played one season. In 1971, he signed with the Minnesota Vikings, and that year he started 11 games at middle linebacker and was honored with the “Bud Grant Player of the Week” award for his play against the Green Bay Packers. Carl played the 1972 season with the Vikings before moving on to the San Diego Chargers for the 1973 and 1974 seasons. During his two seasons with the Chargers, Carl started 15 games at linebacker, intercepting two passes. He saw action as a linebacker and special teams member for the 1975 Chicago Bears, before ending his NFL career in the same capacity with the 1976 St. Louis Cardinals. Carl’s NFL career spanned seven seasons; he played 76 National Football League games, performing as a starter in 27 of those games. In 1985, Carl was inducted into the WCU W. Glenn Killinger Hall of Fame. In 1995, he was inducted into the Delaware County Hall of Fame, and in 2005 his name was placed on the Strath Haven High School Wall of Honor. During his high school career, Carl earned seven varsity letters, co-captained the football team and earned All-Delco honors.
