Leo Scoda
Tennis Coach • Phoenixville

Leo Scoda, born in 1942 in Pittstown (PA) and a 1963 graduate of Penn State, is the longtime Boys Tennis Coach at Phoenixville Area High School. At the end of the 2013 high school tennis season, Scoda possessed a 630-99 record (86% winning percentage) in a career that has spanned 50 years (1964-2013). Interestingly, Phoenixville was just starting its tennis program when Leo joined the faculty and applied for the newly created coach’s position in 1964. With little more than a working knowledge of the sport, he worked tirelessly to learn the fundamentals and strategy of the game. Under his tutelage, Scoda’s teams have won 34 league championships (11 Ches-Mont and 23 Pac-10), and his players have won numerous singles and doubles titles. Leo guided his Phoenixville squad to a winning streak of 71 matches (between 1979 and 1983) and to an undefeated mark of 196-0 in 22 straight seasons in the Pac-10 Conference. He is in the U.S. Tennis Association/Middle States Hall of Fame (1998), the Phoenixville Area Old-Timers Athletic Association Hall of Fame (1996) and was named to the Phoenixville Area School District Wall of Fame (2009) as an Educator, Coach and Mayor of Phoenixville (a position from which he is retiring this year). Scoda enjoyed four terms as Phoenixville’s mayor. In 2011, he was named the Philadelphia Area Tennis District/Middle States/USTA High School Coach of the Year. Additionally, in the past 48 years (1966-2013), Leo has also reached thousands of Phoenixville area youngsters as an instructor and supervisor for a summer tennis program sponsored by the Phoenixville Recreation Department. Mr. Scoda also coached the Phoenixville Area High School Girls Team for six years (1977-1982)-where he achieved a record of 61 wins and 17 losses (a 78% winning percentage). Leo was also an inductee into the inaugural class of the Phoenixville Area High School Sports Hall of Fame in October of 2011. The Pottstown Mercury named Scoda as their overall Coach of the Year in 2012.
