Nate enrolled in West Chester State College in 1939 on a full athletic scholarship. His college career was interrupted by World War II and soon after Pearl Harbor he enlisted in the U.S. Army. Selected to be in the U.S. Rangers, he took part in the 1943 invasion of Sicily and was critically wounded in San Pietro. This resulted in the loss of his left eye and he required almost 3 years of surgery and rehab at the Walter Reed and Valley Forge hospitals. He was awarded the Bronze Star and a Purple Heart for his heroic service to our country. Nate re-enrolled in West Chester State College in 1945 and was able to letter in three sports by playing basketball, baseball and soccer. In 1993, Nate was elected to the West Chester University Athletic Hall of Fame. In 1952, Nate moved to Kennett High School where he would become a coaching legend. He coached baseball and basketball from 1953 to 1968. After retiring from coaching in 1968, Nate continued to work with young athletes as Athletic Director of Kennett High School until he retired from teaching in 1983.
